Verify the Email Source

It’s crucial to validate the legitimacy of the emails you receive during your job search with Hotjar. Always ensure that the initial communications you receive come from a verifiable Hotjar email address. Our legitimate team members will use email addresses that end with our official email domain – @hotjar.com. This simple check can help you distinguish between genuine correspondence from Hotjar and potentially fraudulent messages.

Check the Channel of Communication

Hotjar maintains specific communication channels for official correspondence – these include email from a company email account or via LinkedIn from an employee of the company. Hotjar does not initiating contact with job seekers through text messages, Google Chat and Microsoft Outlook.

If you receive unsolicited job offers or messages via text, or through these platforms claiming to be from Hotjar, exercise caution. It’s advisable to question the authenticity of such communications and verify their source.

Confirm the Job Posting’s Source

When exploring job opportunities, ensure that any job postings shared with you originate from our official careers site: https://www.hotjar.com/careers/. We provide a secure and dedicated platform for posting job vacancies. By verifying the source of job listings and applying only through our official channels, you can significantly reduce the risk of falling victim to fraudulent job postings from unauthorized sources. Eventually, our Talent Acquisition Partners can reach out to you directly via LinkedIn for jobs that are not live (see Channel of Communication above)

Detect Fraudulent Communications by Analyzing Writing Style

Scammers often reveal themselves through unprofessional and poorly formatted emails and documents. Pay attention to the quality and professionalism of the correspondence you receive. Letters of employment, benefits overviews, and other official documents from Hotjar should not only come from a verified communication channel, but also be well-structured, free from grammatical errors, and adhere to our established branding guidelines. If you notice inconsistencies or unprofessionalism, it’s a strong indicator of a potential scam.

Personal Information Protection

Protecting your personal information is paramount. Hotjar will never request full personal information details, such as your Social Security number, via email. Upon hire, you will go through our ATS (GreenHouse) and HRIS (Bamboo) to input such information. Be cautious if you receive such requests and always exercise discretion when sharing sensitive information. If you’re unsure about the authenticity of a request, verify the request’s legitimacy through official Hotjar channels and report it if you suspect fraudulent activity.

Equipment Purchases/Money and Cryptocurrency Requests

Before or after being hired by Hotjar, you will never be asked to send funds for equipment purchases or any other reason. This is an uncommon and suspicious request to come from any company. If you encounter such a request, you must exercise extreme caution and refrain from complying. Verify the request’s legitimacy through official company channels and report it if you suspect fraudulent activity.

Next Steps and Additional Resources

By diligently following these guidelines and remaining vigilant throughout your job search, you can safeguard yourself against potential scams and fraudulent activities while pursuing opportunities with Contentsquare. Your security and peace of mind are our top priorities, and we encourage you to reach out to our official channels if you have any doubts or concerns during your application process.

Recruitment FAQ

Are you considering applying or have you applied for a role at Hotjar? Here are answers to our most frequently asked questions.

Applying for jobs at Hotjar

I recently applied now the role is closed off already. What happened?

Our approach is to continue interviews with qualified candidates until we have filled the role. If you’re actively in interviews with us but you no longer see the job online, it might be because we’ve had a high volume of applicants and we need a bit of time to get back to everyone before accepting new applications. We value every candidate and their potential contributions, and we strive to provide equal consideration to all applicants throughout the entirety of our assessment process.

It’s been a while and I haven’t heard from you. Why not?

We respond to all candidates to let them know the outcome of their application at each stage in our process. However, we recognize that our email communications may occasionally encounter technical challenges, potentially landing in your Spam or Junk folder (this is particularly true during the video stage, when applicable). If you find yourself waiting beyond the timeframe indicated in a previous email or if you haven't received a confirmation email or update for your application, we kindly ask you to take a moment and check your Spam or Junk folder.

Because it’s a remote job, why does it matter what time zone or region I’m in?

Because of the way we work, most of our roles have a time zone requirement to ensure collaboration and consistent assistance for customers in those regions. We kindly request that if you do not currently reside in the specified time zones for a role, please refrain from applying as we will be unable to consider your application.

We understand that candidates may sometimes express their willingness to work according to a different time zone or region, but it's important to note that we cannot consider such requests.

Can I apply to more than one role at Hotjar?

We're thrilled by your enthusiasm and keen interest in joining Hotjar! If you’d like to apply for multiple job opportunities, we kindly request that you submit separate applications for each position. By customizing your application materials to match the specific requirements of each role, we can more effectively evaluate your qualifications and determine the best fit. Our Talent Acquisition team will thoroughly review each application independently, giving you a fair chance for all relevant positions you apply to.

Can I reapply for a role I’m interested in?

We completely understand that life brings new experiences and opportunities for growth. If you feel that you have acquired additional skills, experience, or qualifications since your last application, you’re welcome to submit a fresh application. We understand that personal and professional growth can occur at different paces for each individual. We typically recommend allowing approximately six months for acquiring additional skills and experiences that could enhance your candidacy for the same or similar positions.

I don’t see any roles that match my interest, can I send a spontaneous application?

While some companies accept unsolicited applications, we've decided to focus on candidates who have applied for specific roles. This ensures that we have an up-to-date application and CV, a clearer understanding of your goals and career interests, and offer candidates timely updates and meaningful interactions. We encourage individuals to monitor our Careers Page for job postings and submit applications when specific positions become available.

Does Hotjar require a specific CV or resumé format?

Hotjar embraces diverse CV formats and we do not have a specific preference. However, to effectively evaluate candidates, we generally find that a chronological CV in PDF version is the most effective format. This includes, but is not limited to, contact details, employment history, role responsibilities, hard skills, measurable impacts, achievements, and more. While cover letters are not mandatory, candidates can submit one with their application if they wish to offer additional insights into their career and profile. We value any supplementary information that provides a deeper understanding of your professional journey.

Hotjar’s Recruitment process

How long does your recruitment process typically take?

It generally takes 4-6 weeks for candidates that make it all the way through our process. We also try our best to offer a decision and feedback within 3 days of each interview with us.

4-6 weeks? Why does it take so long?

We have carefully designed our process to incorporate both independent and collaborative aspects that mirror the type of work our team regularly engages in. This includes steps that require candidates to complete independent tasks and have their work reviewed by our team. While this does add some time to the process, our intention is to ensure that we find the right fit for the position and provide candidates with a glimpse into our work environment. We value your time and commitment, and we want to assure you that, regardless of the duration, we are dedicated to responding to each candidate as promptly as possible. Our internal commitment is to keep you updated with any news or changes in your application, ensuring you stay informed throughout the process.

What steps are involved in the recruitment process?

We're always looking to improve our recruitment process so the steps can vary as we try new workflows. To ensure uniformity, all candidates that apply for the same role have the exact same steps in our recruitment process. However, if a candidate applies for two different roles, the steps they are involved in might differ a bit as we try new things. We’ve summarized the five most common steps in our process in the graphic below. At each stage, we review the candidate's submissions and interactions to determine if it makes sense to invite the candidate to move to the next stage in our process.

For our Commercial, Operational, and Marketing roles, of any level, the process is:

For our Software Engineer, Frontend and Software, and Backend roles of any level, the process is:

What is the Intro call and what does it involve?

Our Intro call is an initial interaction between our Talent Acquisition Partner and yourself during the early stages of the recruitment process. It allows us to genuinely get to know you better, delve into your unique experiences, qualifications, and skills, ensuring they align with the requirements of the role. Moreover, we will explore your expectations for the position, discuss the Hotjar culture and values, and provide you with the opportunity to dive into any burning questions you might have.

Why do you ask candidates to record a video?

To offer flexibility and convenience to candidates, we occasionally utilize video interviews as an alternative to traditional introductory calls. This allows you to conduct the interview at a time that suits you best. We find videos to be a valuable tool as they provide us with insights into your personality and communication skills. Don’t worry, we're not looking for Hollywood-quality productions; what matters most is hearing from you in your authentic voice.

Getting ready for your interviews.

Your interview is a chance for both of us to determine if we're a match. So take a deep breath, bring your authentic self, and let's have a meaningful conversation. We're excited to learn more about you and share more about what makes Hotjar an amazing place to work.

We encourage all our candidates to embrace the STAR model. This approach provides a structured way to respond to behavioral-based interview questions. Remember, STAR stands for Situation, Task, Action, and Result. By using this model, you'll be able to share your experiences in a clear and comprehensive way, allowing us to understand your skills and accomplishments better. If you've faced challenges, disagreements, or made mistakes, don't shy away from sharing them. We're more interested in how you tackled these situations and the lessons you've learned from them. Your ability to problem-solve and grow is what truly matters.

Our team is here to get to know you better. Pay close attention to the questions they pose and respond thoughtfully. While it's great to share relevant insights, make sure your responses directly address the question at hand. If there's a point you're passionate about discussing, consider saving it for the later stages of the interview when you're invited to ask questions.

We value your curiosity and eagerness to learn about Hotjar just as much as we want to learn about you. We encourage you to come prepared with questions about Hotjar and the role you’ve applied for to make sure that we align with your aspirations.

What does your Task involve?

The nature of the task can vary depending on the position you're applying for at Hotjar. Typically the task is one day worth of work, but we provide candidates with a week to complete the task at their own pace and style.

Sometimes, we may ask you to draw from your past experience and share a relevant business case or project that highlights your skills and expertise, aligning with the requirements of the role. Other times, we might present you with a specific challenge and invite you to propose creative solutions. If you're applying for an Engineering role, we'll provide a repository where you can demonstrate your skills by creating a mini-service based on the given requirements.

Throughout the process, we want to ensure that you have a supportive environment to thrive in. That's why we may welcome you into our Hotjar Slack, where you can connect with our team and ask any questions you may have. Once you've completed the task, we'll arrange a video call where you can showcase your findings to our team. Our aim is to create an inclusive and engaging experience that allows you to shine and express your unique perspective and ideas. We're genuinely excited to witness your talent in action and see how your contributions can make a difference at Hotjar!

Who will I speak with during the recruitment process?

During the initial three stages of the process, you can expect to hear from various individuals who play important roles in our recruitment journey. This includes someone from our Talent Acquisition Team, the Hiring Manager responsible for the position, and, in certain cases, additional members of the relevant hiring team. We believe in a collaborative approach to ensure a thorough evaluation and provide you with a comprehensive understanding of our organization and the opportunity at hand.

Does Hotjar offer any resources or support for accessibility requests?

We understand that everyone has unique experiences, including those related to disabilities, both visible and invisible. We want to assure you that your decision to disclose any disability or share your accessibility needs is entirely up to you, and we respect and support your choice. Our main goal is to create an inclusive and welcoming environment where all candidates can succeed. We are committed to working together with you to identify and implement reasonable accommodations that candidates require. At the same time, it's important to note that meeting the role's requirements, such as employment experience, and skills, is essential for all candidates.

If I’m offered a role, will you contact my references?

While we value the opportunity to speak with someone who is familiar with your work and can provide insights, it's important to clarify the purpose of these calls. Our intention is not to make a yes/no decision on whether to offer you a spot on our team. The decision-making process will be based on your overall recruitment journey, and we typically request to speak with references only after extending a formal offer.

Once a verbal offer has been accepted, we will kindly ask you to share the contact details of someone you have worked closely with and who can provide valuable input. The objective of these reference conversations is to gain a deeper understanding of how we can best support you in your role; learn about your strengths and areas of expertise, and where we can provide additional assistance. The purpose of these discussions is not to search for any negative aspects or red flags. Our focus is on creating an environment that enables your success and growth within our team.

How does Hotjar employ people?

At this time we are only able to provide official employment status to those located in France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Malta, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, The Netherlands, and The United Kingdom, and through an Employer of Records in Hungary and The United States. All other candidates join our team as full-time independent contractors and are responsible for paying any taxes or fees where they reside.

Why does Hotjar fill roles with contractors?

We seek to find the right expertise and talent for each position. This means that if you’re not a resident in one of the countries above, we have the opportunity for you to work as a contractor.

It's important to note that specific differences may arise based on the contractor's location. Generally, the key disparities often involve contractors being solely responsible for managing aspects such as taxes, pension/retirement, and healthcare and should be aware of the associated obligations.

What is Hotjar's approach to Compensation?

At Hotjar we do not factor in any differences in compensation based on where you are located. We believe everyone should be compensated based on the market value of their role and the value the role brings to the company. We also don't believe in complicated bonus or equity schemes. Instead, we benchmark all roles based on the labor market in London and aspire to pay our team at the high end of that range so that they can have a healthy and predictable income. The specific compensation amount offered to a successful candidate will be based on relative experience and skills. On average, our offers typically fall in the first half range published for the role and more information will be available in the job ad.

Can Hotjar offer VISA sponsorship?

Candidates should have the right to work in the intended location, which means that you are legally authorized to work in that country, either as a citizen or through another type of status that grants you that permission. At this point, Hotjar does not offer assistance with right to work and it is within the individual’s responsibility to ensure the right to work is in place.

If I join Hotjar will I be required to travel?

We value the importance of face-to-face gatherings, which we categorize as either meetups or work-togethers. Meetups are typically broader events that involve the entire company or specific teams, while work-togethers are smaller initiatives driven by employees and are covered by the work-together perk. This budget is specifically allocated to support team members in covering the costs associated with in-person gatherings, whether it involves travel, local work-togethers, or even virtual work-togethers.

As a remote-first company, we recognize the significance of these face-to-face meetings in fostering stronger connections among team members. They provide an invaluable opportunity for bonding and team-building, creating an environment that goes beyond traditional business meetings. It's important to note that attendance at these gatherings is not mandatory, as we understand that timing and personal circumstances may not always align.

To learn more about our Meetups, we encourage you to refer to our Team Manual. However, we would like to inform you that, in 2023, no in-person meetups will take place (don't worry, we're keeping our work-togethers). We assure you that we continually explore alternative ways to facilitate meaningful connections and engagement within our remote work environment.

I’ve never worked remotely before. How does it work?

It's important to recognize that working remotely may not be suitable for everyone. If you thrive in a formal office structure, then working with Hotjar might not align with your preferences. However, we strive to cultivate an environment that fosters many of these elements, albeit in a virtual space. We leverage various online tools and services to encourage collaboration, facilitate meetings, share information, and collaborate on projects. Working remotely is not new to us, we've been doing it since 2014.

We prioritize your ability to work from anywhere as long as you have a reliable and consistent internet connection and are within the time zones associated with your role. We have flexible working hours within Hotjar, with team members deciding their own schedule across our standard working days (Monday to Friday) and team’s rituals. Each team member works the number of hours they are contracted to, based on their contract or reduced working hours contract addendum.

Although Hotjar is fully remote, does the company have any physical offices I can go to if I’d like?

Hotjar does not have physical offices for our employees to work from. We understand the importance of having a productive and comfortable home office environment. That's why we provide a Home Office Budget to support you in setting up your workspace with the necessary tools and amenities.

In addition to the Home Office Budget, we also offer a Working Space Budget which can be utilized for recurring expenses related to maintaining a home office, or for coworking space memberships, giving you the flexibility to choose the setup that works best for you.

After joining Hotjar, am I able to relocate to another country?

At Hotjar, we value the diverse backgrounds and global perspectives our team members bring. We offer opportunities for long-term and permanent relocations across different countries, provided that employees can continue working within their role’s EMEA or America's time zones and have the necessary right to work in the new location. Depending on the specific country, your employment status may transition to being an employee, a contractor, or employed via an Employer on Records (EOR) to ensure compliance with local regulations and requirements in your new country of residence. We strive to support our employees throughout the relocation process, ensuring a smooth transition and compliance with relevant employment laws.

As a fully remote company, is there a way for socializing with coworkers?

We understand the importance of socializing with coworkers, even in a fully remote environment. We believe that work is about more than just tasks and deadlines - it's about building relationships and enjoying shared experiences.

To encourage social interactions among our team members, we curate a wide array of engaging activities. These include virtual team meet-ups, donut-meetings (where team members are randomly matched for casual conversations), and interactive sessions. Our interactive sessions offer a diverse range of experiences, such as playing games like Bingo, practicing the calming art of Yoga, coming together for delightful Cook Togethers (where we've even compiled our own Hotjar Cookbook), exploring the art of Origami, and inviting inspiring guest speakers for panel discussions on topics that matter to us.We also have various Slack channels where you can connect with like-minded individuals, sharing your experiences and interests. Trust us, we have a channel for almost every hobby you can think of!

In addition, each team member receives a Work Together Budget explicitly designed to nurture personal connections within our distributed work environment. This budget enables team members to cover the costs associated with in-person travel work togethers, local work togethers, or even virtual work togethers.

We firmly believe that socializing transcends physical distance and is enriched by our shared values and enthusiasm for technology and community. At Hotjar, we foster an inclusive and engaging environment where social connections thrive.

Does Hotjar offer any internship opportunities?

While we genuinely value the growth and development of professionals, we currently do not have a structured program in place that can provide the necessary supervision, training, and mentorship for interns.

What is the tech stack that Hotjar uses on its Engineering team?

At Hotjar, our tech stack may vary slightly across different services, but here's a general overview:

For our backend services, Python serves as the primary programming language. We rely on Javascript, Typescript, and primarily React for our frontend development. PostgreSQL is our main database of choice. To ensure scalability and efficiency, we leverage Kubernetes running on AWS as our infrastructure.
